Carbon Steel AISI 1020 / S20C is a mild carbon steel, with low hardenability properties. This material has high machinability, high strength, high ductility and good weldability.

Due to its low carbon content, material S20C is resistant to induction hardening or flame hardening. However, due to lack of alloying elements, it will not respond to nitriding.

AISI 1020 Steel can be widely used in all industrial sectors, which can enhance weldability or machinability properties.

Weldability

S20C Low Carbon Steel can be welded by normal welding processes. It has good weldability in the S20C Polished Condition. However, S20C Carbon Steel is suggested not to perform welding in the heat treated / carburized condition.

Heat Treatment of AISI 1020 Carbon Steel

Annealing

Heat to 870 oC – 9100 oC hold until temperature until the temperature remains constant, ten cooled in a furnace.

Application of S20C AISI 1020 Carbon Steel

S20C is used in the condition of case hardened and used for a simple structural applications such as Cold Headed Bolts.

AISI 1020 Carbon Steel can be used to manufacture axles, General Engineering & Machinery Parts and components, etc.
