What Is SUS430 / SS430 Stainless Steel Plate?
SS430 is a general-purpose ferritic stainless steel containing around 16–18% chromium, with no nickel addition.
It offers good corrosion resistance in mild environments, good formability, and a bright, attractive finish — making it a popular, lower-cost alternative to the austenitic 300-series grades where extreme corrosion resistance isn't required.
It is not hardenable by heat treatment and is generally non-magnetic-adjacent (mildly magnetic, like other ferritic grades).
What Is the Difference Between SS430 & SS430F?
SS430F is the free-machining version of SS430.
Sulphur is added to the composition (typically around 0.15% min, versus 0.03% max in standard SS430) to form manganese sulphide inclusions that act as internal chip-breakers — this significantly improves machinability on CNC lathes and screw machines, making SS430F the preferred choice for turned parts such as fittings, valve components, and fasteners.
The trade-off is that the added sulphur reduces both corrosion resistance and weldability compared to standard SS430.
As a rule of thumb: choose SS430 for plate, sheet, and fabricated/welded parts where formability and finish matter; choose SS430F only where the part will be machined and welding isn't required.

Corrosion Resistance & Applications
SS430 offers good resistance to nitric acid, mild organic and inorganic acids, food, and atmospheric corrosion — though less than the austenitic 300-series grades and than higher-chromium ferritic grades. It's widely used for its bright, easily maintained finish and cost-effectiveness. Typical applications: kitchen equipment and sinks, appliance trim and housings, automotive trim, architectural and decorative panels, and general-purpose fabrication where mild corrosive exposure and good formability matter more than maximum corrosion resistance.
