What Is SUS321 / SS321 Stainless Steel Plate?

SS321 is the basic austenitic 18/8 steel (SUS304) stabilised with titanium. This titanium addition makes SS321 resistant to intergranular corrosion after heating within the carbide precipitation range of 425–850°C — a problem that can affect unstabilised grades after welding or prolonged heat exposure.

SS321 is the grade of choice for applications in the temperature range up to approximately 900°C, combining high strength, resistance to scaling, and freedom from carbide precipitation during welding or stress-relieving. It is widely used in the aerospace, automotive exhaust, chemical processing, and power generation industries.

A Note on Welding SS321

Titanium does not transfer well across a high-temperature welding arc, so SS321 is not recommended as a welding filler/consumable itself. For this reason, SS347 (niobium-stabilised) is the standard consumable used to weld SS321 parent plate, since niobium performs the same carbide-stabilisation role but transfers reliably across the arc. Like other austenitic grades, SS321 has excellent forming and welding characteristics, is readily brake- or roll-formed, and does not require post-weld annealing.

SUS321 vs SUS321H

  • SUS321 — standard grade, titanium-stabilised, suited to service up to approximately 900°C
  • SUS321H — a modification of SUS321 with higher carbon content, providing improved high-temperature strength for demanding structural applications

Not Just Full Plates — We Supply Bandsaw Cut-to-Size Too

E Steel supplies both full plate and bandsaw cut-to-size, down to the exact dimensions on your cutting list.
This means you don't need to buy a full plate and cut the remainder yourself, and you don't need to source a separate cutting service.

We operate multiple bandsaw cutting machines at our Klang Malaysia warehouse, dedicated to cold-cutting stainless steel plates.
Bandsaw cutting is our preferred method — and the method we recommend to customers — because it delivers:

  •  Clean, burr-minimal cut surface — ready for machining or direct use
  •  No heat-affected zone (HAZ) — the cut stays cold, so the material's stabilised microstructure at the cut edge is undisturbed
  •  No surface discoloration or oxide scale — unlike thermal cutting methods
  •  Nicer, straighter cutting surface — often no second facing process needed before fabrication
  •  Efficient and fast — quick turnaround even for complex multi-piece cutting lists
  •  No minimum order quantity — from a single cut piece to a full cutting list

Bandsaw Cutting vs Plasma / Laser Cutting for SUS321 Plates

A common question from customers: "Why not just plasma or laser cut my SUS321 plate?"
Thermal cutting methods (plasma and laser) are fast, but for SUS321 — a grade specifically chosen for its stability against carbide precipitation in the 425–850°C range — bandsaw (cold) cutting is generally the better choice.

Factor Bandsaw Cutting (Cold Cut) Plasma / Laser Cutting (Thermal Cut)
Heat-Affected Zone (HAZ) None — material stays cold throughout the cut Present — heat can push the cut edge through the 425–850°C carbide precipitation range
Titanium-Stabilisation Integrity Preserved — no additional thermal cycle introduced at the edge Localised heating at the cut edge adds a thermal cycle, undermining the very stability SUS321 is chosen for
Cut Surface Finish Clean, straight, minimal burr Dross, discoloration, oxide scale often present, needing secondary cleaning
Post-Processing Needed Usually ready for welding or fabrication directly Often requires grinding/deburring before use
Precision on Thick Plates Consistent accuracy across the thickness range Heat distortion/warping risk increases with thickness
Suitability for Critical Industries Preferred for aerospace, exhaust systems, and high-temperature fabrication Higher risk of edge integrity issues for these applications

In short: Plasma and laser cutting introduce heat directly into a temperature range that SUS321 is specifically formulated to resist without compromise.
Bandsaw cold-cutting avoids this entirely, which is why we recommend it as the default method for SUS321 plate, particularly for high-temperature structural and welded fabrication.

Corrosion & Heat Resistance of SUS321

SUS321 offers good oxidation resistance in intermittent service up to 900°C, and in continuous service up to 925°C. It performs well across the 425–900°C range, particularly where subsequent aqueous corrosive conditions are also present — a combination that makes it a common choice for exhaust systems and process equipment that see both heat cycling and moisture exposure.

SUS321H, with its higher carbon content, offers greater hot strength and is particularly suited to high-temperature structural applications.

Heat Treatment

Solution treatment (annealing): heat to 950–1120°C and cool rapidly for maximum corrosion resistance.
Stabilising: heat to 870–900°C for 1 hour per 25mm of thickness and air cool. Recommended for the most severe service conditions (above 425°C), and particularly for material annealed at the upper end of the annealing temperature range.
Stress relief: heat to 700°C for 1 to 2 hours and air cool.
SUS321 cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.

Welding SUS321

SUS321 has excellent weldability by all standard fusion methods, with or without filler metal. AS 1554.6 pre-qualifies welding of SS321 and SS347 using SS347 rods or electrodes. As noted above, SS347 filler is preferred over SS321 filler, since niobium (used in SS347) transfers reliably across a welding arc while titanium does not.

  • Aerospace components and structures
  • Automotive and industrial exhaust systems
  • Chemical processing equipment
  • Expansion joints and bellows
  • Furnace and heat-treatment equipment
  • Boiler and pressure vessel components
