What is SS316 / SS316L Stainless Steel?
This molybdenum content dramatically improves resistance to pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, and general attack in chloride-rich and acidic environments, making SS316 the material of choice for marine, offshore, pharmaceutical, food processing, and chemical handling applications across Southeast Asia and globally.
SS316L is the low-carbon variant (max 0.030% C versus 0.08% C for SS316), which eliminates the risk of sensitisation (chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries) in the heat-affected zone during welding. This makes SS316L the preferred grade for welded fabrications — particularly in thicker sections — where post-weld annealing is not practical.
In practice, SS316 and SS316L are frequently dual-certified, confirming compliance with both specifications from a single heat.

In the tropical industrial environments — where coastal humidity, industrial chloride exposure, and aggressive chemical processing are common — SS316 / SS316L is frequently the minimum acceptable grade for exposed structural, process, and marine applications.

Dual Certification — SS316 / SS316L
It is common for SS316 and SS316L to be supplied in dual-certified form, particularly for round bars and plate products.
Dual-certified material has chemical and mechanical properties that simultaneously comply with both SS316 and SS316L specifications, providing flexibility for the end user.
Important note: Dual-certified SS316/SS316L stock is not interchangeable with SS316H and is not acceptable for elevated-temperature ASME Code applications where SS316H is specifically required.
