What Is 304 / 304L Stainless Steel Plate?

304 is the most widely used austenitic stainless steel grade in the world — the standard "18/8" chromium-nickel alloy, offering an excellent balance of corrosion resistance, formability, weldability, and cost. It's the default choice across food processing, architectural, general fabrication, and light industrial applications wherever aggressive chloride exposure isn't a primary concern.

304L is the low-carbon variant (max 0.03% carbon vs 0.08% in standard 304), making it the preferred choice for welded components where sensitisation and intergranular corrosion at the heat-affected zone must be avoided. Both grades are commonly stocked and sold as 304/304L dual-certified plates, meaning the material meets both specifications simultaneously.

304 vs 316 — Which One Do You Need?

• SS304/SS304L — the standard, cost-effective choice for general fabrication, food-grade, and architectural use in mild-to-moderate environments
• SS316/SS316L — molybdenum addition gives superior resistance to chlorides and marine/chemical exposure, at a higher cost — worth asking us about if your environment involves salts, acids, or coastal exposure

Bandsaw Cutting vs Plasma / Laser Cutting for Stainless Steel Plates

A common question from customers: "Why not just plasma or laser cut my SS304 plate?" 
Thermal cutting methods (plasma and laser) are fast for carbon steel, but for stainless steel and especially 304/304L used in food-grade, architectural, or precision fabrication applications — bandsaw (cold) cutting is generally the better choice.

In short: Plasma and laser cutting introduce heat, which can create a heat-affected zone that compromises the very corrosion resistance customers choose stainless steel — and specifically 304/304L — for in the first place. Bandsaw cold-cutting avoids this entirely, which is why we recommend it as the default method for stainless steel plate, particularly for thicker sections and critical applications.
