SS416 / SUS416 Stainless Steel Plate | Cut to Size

SS416 / SUS416 Stainless Steel Plate — Rare in Plate Form | Ready in Stock | Cut to Size.

SS416 stainless steel plate is one of the hardest grades to source in the region — mostly in round bars or hexagon bars.
Finding it in plate form, ready to cut to your required dimensions, is a genuine challenge for engineers and machinists.

E Steel Sdn. Bhd. stocks 416 stainless steel plates in Klang, Selangor, and offers bandsaw cutting to your exact size with no minimum order.
Whether your drawing calls it SS416, SUS416, AISI 416, EN 1.4005, DIN 1.4005, UNS S41600, or X12CrS13 — we have it, and we can cut it.

What Is SS416 / SUS416 Stainless Steel?

AISI 416 (SS416 / SUS416) is a free-machining martensitic stainless steel — and it holds the title of the most machinable stainless steel grade ever developed, with a machinability rating of approximately 85% relative to free-machining carbon steel.
No other stainless steel grade comes close.

Like grade 303, it achieves this through a deliberate addition of sulphur (min 0.15%), which causes chips to break cleanly during cutting and dramatically reduces tool wear.
But unlike 303, which is austenitic and cannot be hardened. SS416 is martensitic, meaning it can be heat treated (quenched and tempered) to a wide range of hardness and strength levels.

This combination : maximum machinability plus hardenability and makes 416 the preferred grade when a component needs both excellent CNC machinability and high final hardness or wear resistance.

Why is SS416 Stainless Steel Plate Rare?

Most of the stainless steel SS416 production goes into round bar or hex bar — the standard starting forms for turned and machined parts.
Plate form is produced in much smaller quantities and is not routinely stocked by general steel distributors. Engineers who need a plate in SS416 often struggle to find plate stock locally in Malaysia or Singapore, and result to machining in high costs.

We solve that problem.

Stainless Steel 416 vs 303 — Which Free-Machining Grade Do You Need?

Both are free-machining stainless steels with sulphur additions. Here is how they differ:

  SS416 / SUS416 / 1.4005 SS303 / SUS303 / 1.4305
Steel family Martensitic (magnetic) Austenitic (non-magnetic)
Machinability ~85% — highest of all SS ~75–80%
Can be hardened? Yes — by heat treatment No
Corrosion resistance Moderate (lower Cr, no Ni) Good (18% Cr, 8% Ni)
Weldability Poor Poor
Magnetic? Yes No (in annealed state)
Best for High-strength, hardened, wear-resistant machined parts Corrosion-resistant machined parts
Typical applications Shafts, gears, valve stems, firearm parts, pump shafts Fittings, fasteners, precision fixtures

Important : Limitations of SS416

Know before you specify:

Not suitable for welding — sulphur content causes hot cracking. Use SS410 if welding is required.
Lower corrosion resistance than 300-series — 416 has only 12–14% Cr and no nickel. Not suitable for marine, humid, or chemical environments without additional surface treatment.
Magnetic — unlike 303 or 304, 416 is always magnetic. If your application requires non-magnetic material, 416 is not suitable.
Do not confuse with SS416 Se — AISI 416 Se (Selenium-bearing variant, UNS S41623) is a separate grade where selenium replaces sulphur. Properties are similar but the grade is even rarer. Confirm your drawing requirement with us.

Frequently Asked Questions for SS416 / SUS416 Stainless Steel Plate | Cut to Size

What is UNS S41600?
S41600 is the American Unified Numbering System designation for AISI 416. If your drawing specifies S41600, that is SS416. We supply with full MTC traceability.
1.4005 is the European and German Werkstoffnummer (material number) for AISI 416. The European chemical designation is X12CrS13, where ''S'' denotes the sulphur addition. It is fully equivalent to SS416 / SUS416.
Yes. SS416 is the common trade abbreviation, SUS416 is the Japanese JIS designation, and AISI 416 is the American standard. All refer to the same free-machining martensitic stainless steel with sulphur addition.
Yes. X12CrS13 is the European chemical designation for EN 1.4005, which is fully equivalent to SS416 / SUS416.
There is no minimum order quantity. We supply from a single cut piece to mass production quantity.
No. AISI 416 Se (UNS S41623) replaces sulphur with selenium for improved machinability in certain automatic screw machine operations. Properties are similar but it is a distinct grade designation. Standard 416 (S41600) is the more commonly available variant. Contact us to confirm which grade your drawing requires.
Yes. This is one of its key advantages over 303. After CNC machining, 416 components can be quenched and tempered to achieve hardness in the range of 22–35 HRC, significantly increasing wear resistance and strength.
Plates are supplied in the annealed / QT Condition, depends on sizes.
Most production of 416 goes to bar and rod form, as the majority of applications are for turned/machined round or hex stock. Plate is produced in far smaller quantities and not routinely stocked by general distributors. We specifically stock 416 in plate form to serve engineers who need flat machining blanks.
In E Steel Sdn Bhd, we mostly cut SS416 from flat bar or round bars.

Our strength is to cut SS416 round bars to customer's required plate size.
