What Is Nitronic 60 Stainless Steel Plate?

Nitronic 60 is an austenitic stainless steel strengthened with additions of manganese, silicon, and nitrogen. These alloying elements make it unique compared to conventional austenitic grades like 304 and 316: the silicon and manganese additions give it outstanding resistance to galling, wear, and fretting — even in the annealed condition — while the nitrogen addition roughly doubles its yield strength compared to standard 304/316.

Corrosion resistance is comparable to Type 304 and 316 stainless steel in most environments, and oxidation resistance is retained at elevated temperatures up to approximately 982°C (1800°F).
Nitronic 60 also remains non-magnetic even after cold working, which makes it a common choice where both strength and non-magnetic properties are required.

Key Strengths of Nitronic 60

  • High yield strength — roughly double that of conventional austenitic stainless grades, allowing thinner sections for the same load
  • Outstanding galling and wear resistance, even without surface treatment — ideal for parts that mate, rotate, or slide against each other
  • Retains strength and oxidation resistance at high temperatures up to 982°C (1800°F)
  • Remains non-magnetic even after cold working

Is Nitronic 60 Easy to Machine?

Nitronic 60 machinability is different from standard austenitic grades due to its higher work-hardening tendency and the same anti-galling characteristics that make the material valuable in service. Slower cutting speeds, positive feeds, and sharp tooling are typically recommended, along with adequate cutting fluid to manage heat build-up. The material's resistance to galling — an advantage in the finished part — is exactly why it also resists galling against cutting tools, so machinists generally treat Nitronic 60 with the same care given to other high work-hardening alloys.

Why We Promote Bandsaw Cutting for Nitronic 60 Plates

We operate multiple bandsaw cutting machines at our Klang warehouse, dedicated to cold-cutting stainless and specialty steel plates. Bandsaw cutting is our preferred method — and the method we recommend to customers — because it delivers:

  •  Clean, burr-minimal cut surface — ready for machining or direct use
  •  No heat-affected zone (HAZ) — the cut stays cold, so the alloy's galling resistance and mechanical properties near the edge are preserved
  •  No surface discoloration or oxide scale — unlike thermal cutting methods
  •  Nicer, straighter cutting surface — often no second facing process needed before CNC machining
  •  Efficient and fast — quick turnaround even for complex multi-piece cutting lists
  •  No minimum order quantity — from a single cut piece to a full cutting list

Bandsaw Cutting vs Plasma / Laser Cutting for Nitronic 60 Plates

A common question from customers: "Why not just plasma or laser cut my Nitronic 60 plate?"
Thermal cutting methods (plasma and laser) are fast, but for a nitrogen-strengthened alloy like Nitronic 60 — often specified precisely because of its galling resistance and high-temperature strength — bandsaw (cold) cutting is generally the better choice.

Factor Bandsaw Cutting (Cold Cut) Plasma / Laser Cutting (Thermal Cut)
Heat-Affected Zone (HAZ) None — material stays cold throughout the cut Present — heat can alter grain structure and properties near the cut edge
Galling/Wear Resistance at Edge Preserved — no disruption to the alloy's surface characteristics Can be affected in the heat-affected zone near the cut edge
Cut Surface Finish Clean, straight, minimal burr Dross, discoloration, oxide scale often present, needing secondary cleaning
Post-Processing Needed Usually ready for CNC machining directly Often requires grinding/deburring before use
Precision on Thick Plates Consistent accuracy across the thickness range Heat distortion/warping risk increases with thickness
Suitability for Critical Industries Preferred for aerospace, oil field, petrochemical, food & drug, surgical applications Higher risk of contamination or edge integrity issues for these industries
