What Is SS310 / SS310S Stainless Steel Plate?

SS310 combines excellent high-temperature properties with good ductility and weldability, and is designed specifically for high-temperature service.
It resists oxidation in continuous service at temperatures up to 1150°C, provided reducing sulphur gases are not present, and is also suitable for intermittent service at temperatures up to 1040°C.

SS310S (UNS S31008) is the lower-carbon variant, used where the application environment involves moist corrodents at a temperature range lower than typical "high temperature" service.  The reduced carbon content of 310S lowers its high-temperature strength compared to standard SS310, but improves resistance to carbide precipitation and subsequent aqueous corrosion.

Like other austenitic grades, both SS310 and SS310S offer excellent toughness, even down to cryogenic temperatures, although other grades are normally selected for that specific environment.

SS310 vs SS310S — Which One Do You Need?

  • SS310 — higher carbon content, higher high-temperature strength, best for continuous or intermittent high-heat service up to 1150°C
  • SS310S — lower carbon content, reduced risk of carbide precipitation, better suited where moist corrosive conditions and subsequent aqueous corrosion resistance matter alongside heat resistance

Why We Promote Bandsaw Cutting for SS310/SS310S Plates

We operate multiple bandsaw cutting machines at our Klang Malaysia warehouse, dedicated to cold-cutting stainless steel plates.
Bandsaw cutting is our preferred method — and the method we recommend to customers — because it delivers:

  •  Clean, burr-minimal cut surface — ready for machining or direct use
  •  No heat-affected zone (HAZ) — the cut stays cold, so the material's microstructure at the cut edge is undisturbed
  •  No surface discoloration or oxide scale — unlike thermal cutting methods
  •  Nicer, straighter cutting surface — often no second facing process needed before fabrication
  •  Efficient and fast — quick turnaround even for complex multi-piece cutting lists
  •  No minimum order quantity — from a single cut piece to a full cutting list

Bandsaw Cutting vs Plasma / Laser Cutting for SS310/SS310S Plates

A common question from customers: "Why not just plasma or laser cut my SS310 plate?"
Thermal cutting methods (plasma and laser) are fast, but for high-temperature-service grades like SS310/SS310S — often fabricated into furnace parts, heat treatment baskets, and jigs — bandsaw (cold) cutting is generally the better choice.

Factor Bandsaw Cutting (Cold Cut) Plasma / Laser Cutting (Thermal Cut)
Heat-Affected Zone (HAZ) None — material stays cold throughout the cut Present — heat can alter grain structure near the cut edge
Risk of Localised Sensitisation None — no additional heat cycle introduced at the edge Localised heating at the cut edge adds an extra thermal cycle, a factor to consider for parts already destined for repeated high-temperature service
Cut Surface Finish Clean, straight, minimal burr Dross, discoloration, oxide scale often present, needing secondary cleaning
Post-Processing Needed Usually ready for welding/fabrication directly Often requires grinding/deburring before use
Precision on Thick Plates Consistent accuracy across the thickness range Heat distortion/warping risk increases with thickness
Suitability for Critical Industries Preferred for furnace fabrication, heat treatment equipment, and high-value alloy plate Higher risk of edge integrity issues for these applications

Corrosion Resistance of SS310 / SS310S

The high chromium content — intended primarily to boost high-temperature performance — also gives SS310/SS310S good aqueous corrosion resistance.
The Pitting Resistance Equivalent (PRE) is approximately 25, giving seawater resistance broadly similar to SS316 at ambient temperature.

At normal temperatures, SS310/SS310S shows excellent resistance, and in high-temperature service it exhibits good resistance to oxidising and carburising atmospheres. It resists fuming nitric acid at room temperature and fused nitrates up to 425°C. It is subject to stress corrosion cracking, but is more resistant than SS304 or SS316 in this respect.

Heat Resistance of SS310 / SS310S

SS310/SS310S offers good resistance to oxidation in intermittent service in air at temperatures up to 1040°C, and up to 1150°C in continuous service.
It also has good resistance to thermal fatigue and cyclic heating, and is widely used where sulphur dioxide gas is present at elevated temperatures.

Continuous use in the 425–860°C range is not generally recommended if subsequent aqueous corrosion resistance is required, due to carbide precipitation, though the material often performs well in service that fluctuates above and below this range. SS310 is typically used starting from around 800–900°C — above the effective range of grades like SS304H and SS321.

Heat Treatment

Solution treatment (annealing): heat to 1040–1150°C and cool rapidly for maximum corrosion resistance. This treatment is also recommended to restore ductility after every 1000 hours of service above 650°C, due to long-term precipitation of brittle sigma phase. SS310/SS310S cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.

Applications of SS310 / SS310S Stainless Steel Plate

  • Furnace parts
  • Oil burner parts
  • Carburising boxes
  • Heat treatment baskets and jigs
  • Heat exchangers
  • Welding filler wire and electrodes

Alternative Grades to Consider

If your application does not require the full high-temperature capability of SS310, the following alternative grades may be worth considering:

Grade Why It Might Be Chosen Instead of SS310
3CR12 Heat resistance is needed, but only to about 600°C
SS304H Heat resistance is needed, but only to about 800°C
SS321 Heat resistance is needed, but only to about 900°C, with subsequent aqueous corrosion resistance also required
253MA (2111HTR) Slightly higher temperature resistance than 310 is needed, along with better resistance to reducing sulphide atmosphere and higher immunity from sigma phase embrittlement

Frequently Asked Questions for SS310 SS310S Stainless Steel Plates

Q: Is SUS310 the same as SS310 and AISI 310?
Yes. SUS310 is the Japanese JIS designation, SS310 is a common trade abbreviation, and AISI 310 is the American standard. They all refer to the same high-chromium, high-nickel austenitic stainless steel grade.

Q: What is the difference between SS310 and SS310S?
SS310S has a lower maximum carbon content (0.08% vs 0.25%), which reduces the risk of carbide precipitation and improves subsequent aqueous corrosion resistance, at the cost of slightly lower high-temperature strength.

Q: What temperature can SS310/SS310S withstand?
SS310/SS310S resists oxidation in continuous service up to 1150°C, and in intermittent service up to 1040°C, provided reducing sulphur gases are not present.

Q: Where does E Steel source its SS310/SS310S plates from?
We stock SS310/SS310S plates from China and Japan, giving customers a choice based on certification needs and budget.

Q: What is the maximum thickness available?
Please contact E Steel Sdn Bhd to confirm the current maximum thickness in stock for SS310/SS310S plates.

Q: Do you only sell full plates?
No. We supply full plates and bandsaw cut-to-size. Send us your cutting list (dimensions and quantity) and we will provide a quotation.

Q: Why do you recommend bandsaw cutting over plasma or laser cutting for SS310/SS310S?
Bandsaw cutting is a cold-cutting process, so it creates no heat-affected zone and adds no additional thermal cycle to the cut edge — a useful advantage on a grade already selected for its high-temperature behaviour. Plasma and laser cutting generate heat that can alter the material at the cut surface and typically require secondary cleaning or grinding.

Q: What is SS310/SS310S commonly used for?
Common applications include furnace parts, oil burner parts, carburising boxes, heat treatment baskets and jigs, heat exchangers, and welding filler wire and electrodes.

Q: Do you supply to Singapore / Thailand / Vietnam or Indonesia?
Yes. We regularly supply and export SS310/SS310S plates to Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, and other ASEAN countries.

Q: What is the minimum order?
There is no strict minimum order quantity. We supply from a single cut piece to full plates and bulk orders.

Q: Is "Inox 310" the same as SS310?
Yes. "Inox" is a common regional trade term for stainless steel, widely used across Vietnam, Indonesia, and other ASEAN markets. "Inox 310" refers to the same SS310/SUS310 grade.

Q: What determines the price of SS310/SS310S plate?
Price depends on thickness, dimensions, origin mill, quantity, and current raw material (nickel and chromium) market pricing. Contact us for a current quotation based on your cutting list.

Q: Can you provide Mill Test Certificates (MTC)?
Yes. All our SS310/SS310S plates come with 3.1 MTCs traceable to the original mill, compliant with EN 10204.
