SS410 (also designated SUS410, AISI 410, DIN 1.4006, or EN X12Cr13) is the most widely used martensitic stainless steel in the world.
It is uniquely valued for its combination of moderate corrosion resistance, high hardness after heat treatment, and magnetic properties. The characteristics not found in the more common austenitic grades such as SS304 or SS316.
SS410 is a straight-chromium martensitic stainless steel containing approximately 11.5–13.5% chromium.
Unlike austenitic grades (SS304, SS316), which derive their properties from a nickel-chromium microstructure that cannot be hardened by heat treatment, SS410's martensitic crystal structure allows it to be hardened to very high strength levels through quenching and tempering — similar to alloy tool steels.
This makes SS410 the preferred choice wherever hardness, wear resistance, and moderate corrosion resistance must coexist: pump and valve components, turbine blades, cutlery, petrochemical internals, and industrial knife blades are all typical applications.
In the annealed (softened) condition, SS410 is ductile, readily machinable, and easily cut with a bandsaw.
Once hardened and tempered, it achieves tensile strengths exceeding 1,000 MPa and Rockwell hardness up to 43 HRC — far beyond what austenitic grades can reach.
SS410 is specified and traded under different grade designations depending on the country of origin or the applicable standard.
The table below maps all major equivalent codes — essential when cross-referencing mill certificates from Japanese, European, Chinese, or Korean sources, or when a buyer searches using their local standard's terminology.
| Standard / System | Country / Region | Grade Designation | Material Number | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AISI / ASTM | USA | AISI 410 | UNS S41000 | ASTM A240 (plate), A276 (bar) |
| EN / DIN (Europe) | Europe | X12Cr13 | 1.4006 | EN 10088-2 (plate/strip) |
| JIS G4304 | Japan | SUS410 | — | JIS G4304 (hot-rolled plate) |
| KS D3705 | South Korea | STS410 | — | Korean standard, JIS equivalent |
| GB / Chinese Standard | China | 1Cr13 | — | GB/T 3280 (cold-rolled plate) |
| BS (UK) | United Kingdom | 410S21 / EN56A | — | Older BS 970 designation |
| ISO 15510 | International | X12Cr13 | — | ISO harmonised with EN |
| ASME (pressure vessels) | USA | SA-240 Type 410 | UNS S41000 | ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code |
| AMS (aerospace) | USA | AMS 5504 | — | Sheet & strip for aerospace |
| MS ISO (Malaysia) | Malaysia (SIRIM) | X12Cr13 | 1.4006 | Adopts ISO / EN designation |
SS410 and SS410S are related but distinct martensitic grades.
Understanding the difference prevents over-specification or incorrect material selection.
| Property | SS410 (UNS S41000 / 1.4006) | SS410S (UNS S41008 / 1.4000) |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon content | 0.08 – 0.15% max (ASTM A240: 0.08%) | 0.08% max (lower carbon) |
| Hardenability | Fully hardenable by heat treatment | Limited hardening response |
| Weldability | Requires preheat (min. 205°C) & post-weld temper | Better weldability; less risk of cracking |
| Corrosion resistance | Moderate; improves in hardened & polished state | Slightly better than SS410 in annealed state |
| Magnetic? | Yes — all conditions | Yes — all conditions |
| Primary use case | Hardened components: knives, blades, valve trim, pump shafts | Welded assemblies; structural parts not requiring high hardness |
