What Is SUS310 / SUS310S Stainless Steel Round Bar?

SUS310 combines excellent high-temperature properties with good ductility and weldability, and is designed specifically for high-temperature service. It resists oxidation in continuous service at temperatures up to 1150°C, provided reducing sulphur gases are not present, and is also suitable for intermittent service at temperatures up to 1040°C.

SUS310S (UNS S31008) is the lower-carbon variant, used where the application environment involves moist corrodents at a temperature range lower than typical "high temperature" service. The reduced carbon content of 310S lowers its high-temperature strength compared to standard SUS310, but improves resistance to carbide precipitation and subsequent aqueous corrosion.

Like other austenitic grades, both SUS310 and SUS310S offer excellent toughness, even down to cryogenic temperatures, although other grades are normally selected for that specific environment.

SUS310 vs SUS310S — Which One Do You Need?

  • SUS310 — higher carbon content, higher high-temperature strength, best for continuous or intermittent high-heat service up to 1150°C
  • SUS310S — lower carbon content, reduced risk of carbide precipitation, better suited where moist corrosive conditions and subsequent aqueous corrosion resistance matter alongside heat resistance

Corrosion Resistance of SUS310 / SUS310S

The high chromium content — intended primarily to boost high-temperature performance — also gives SUS310/SUS310S good aqueous corrosion resistance. The Pitting Resistance Equivalent (PRE) is approximately 25, giving seawater resistance broadly similar to SS316 at ambient temperature.

At normal temperatures, SUS310/SUS310S shows excellent resistance, and in high-temperature service it exhibits good resistance to oxidising and carburising atmospheres. It resists fuming nitric acid at room temperature and fused nitrates up to 425°C. It is subject to stress corrosion cracking, but is more resistant than SS304 or SS316 in this respect.

Heat Resistance of SUS310 / SUS310S

SUS310/SUS310S offers good resistance to oxidation in intermittent service in air at temperatures up to 1040°C, and up to 1150°C in continuous service. It also has good resistance to thermal fatigue and cyclic heating, and is widely used where sulphur dioxide gas is present at elevated temperatures.

Continuous use in the 425–860°C range is not generally recommended if subsequent aqueous corrosion resistance is required, due to carbide precipitation, though the material often performs well in service that fluctuates above and below this range. SUS310 is typically used starting from around 800–900°C — above the effective range of grades like SS304H and SS321.

Heat Treatment

Solution treatment (annealing): heat to 1040–1150°C and cool rapidly for maximum corrosion resistance. This treatment is also recommended to restore ductility after every 1000 hours of service above 650°C, due to long-term precipitation of brittle sigma phase. SUS310/SUS310S cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.

If your application does not require the full high-temperature capability of SS310, the following alternative grades may be worth considering:

Q: Is SUS310 the same as SS310 and AISI 310?
Yes. SUS310 is the Japanese JIS designation, SS310 is a common trade abbreviation, and AISI 310 is the American standard. They all refer to the same high-chromium, high-nickel austenitic stainless steel grade.

 
SS310S has a lower maximum carbon content (0.08% vs 0.25%), which reduces the risk of carbide precipitation and improves subsequent aqueous corrosion resistance, at the cost of slightly lower high-temperature strength.

 
SUS310/SUS310S resists oxidation in continuous service up to 1150°C, and in intermittent service up to 1040°C, provided reducing sulphur gases are not present.
