SUS304 / SUS304L Corrosion Resistance 

SS304 provides excellent corrosion resistance across a wide range of atmospheric and chemical environments.

It performs well against oxidising acids such as nitric acid and is resistant to most organic acids, food products, and mildly corrosive chemicals. It is widely used in food and beverage processing precisely because it does not impart taste, odour, or contamination.
 
Limitations to be aware of: SS304 is susceptible to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride-containing environments, and to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) above approximately 60°C when exposed to chlorides.
In coastal Malaysia, Singapore, or Indonesian industrial zones with high chloride exposure, consider upgrading to SS316 / SS316L (EN 1.4401 / 1.4404) for critical applications.
 
Chloride resistance guideline:

• Up to ~200 mg/L chlorides at ambient temperature: SS304 is generally acceptable
• Up to ~150 mg/L chlorides at 60°C: SS304 may still be used with monitoring
• Above these thresholds or in submerged / marine environments: specify SS316L or duplex grades

In the tropical industrial environments of Peninsular Malaysia, Johor, and Singapore — where humidity, coastal air, and industrial chloride exposure are common — selecting the correct stainless steel grade is critical. SS304 performs reliably in: - Indoor food processing and pharmaceutical facilities - Air-conditioned architectural applications - Chemical handling with non-chloride media - Fresh water systems and structural components For coastal zones, marine structures, or applications in Singapore's Jurong Island petrochemical corridor, we recommend upgrading to SS316 / SS316L (1.4401 / 1.4404) which contains 2–3% molybdenum for significantly improved chloride pitting resistance. Heat Resistance & High Temperature Applications 

Good oxidation resistance in intermittent service to 870°C and in continuous service to 925°C. Continuous use of SUS304 in the 425-860°C range is not recommended if subsequent aqueous corrosion resistance is important. SUS304L is more resistant to carbide precipitation and can be heated into the above temperature range.

SUS 304H has higher strength at elevated temperatures so is often used for structural and pressure-containing applications at temperatures above about 500°C and up to about 800°C. SUS304H will become sensitised in the temperature range of 425-860°C; this is not a problem for high temperature applications, but will result in reduced aqueous corrosion resistance.

Dual Certification for SUS304 / SUS304L 

It is common for SS304 and SS304L to be stocked in “Dual Certified” form, particularly in plate and pipe. These items have chemical and mechanical properties complying with both SS304 and SS304L specifications. Such dual certified product does not meet SS304H specifications and may be unacceptable for high temperature applications.
