SS420 / SUS420 Stainless Steel Round Bar Supplier — Malaysia & Singapore
Known internationally as SUS420J1 (JIS), AISI 420, UNS S42000, DIN 1.4021, and X20Cr13, Grade 420 is the most widely used hardenable stainless steel in the world — valued for its ability to achieve high hardness through heat treatment, its excellent polishability, and its moderate corrosion resistance.
EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificates are available on every order.
What Is SS420 / SUS420 Stainless Steel?
Unlike the austenitic grades SS304 and SS316, Grade 420 is magnetic and hardenable by heat treatment — making it the preferred choice when hardness, wear resistance, and a sharp, polishable edge are required.
In its annealed condition, SS420 has good machinability and moderate corrosion resistance.
After hardening and tempering, it achieves surface hardness up to 52 HRc and tensile strength exceeding 1,600 MPa — making it ideal for cutting tools, surgical instruments, pump shafts, and precision mould components.
SS420 Grade Variants: 420, 420J1, and 420J2
Grade 420 stainless steel is available in three primary carbon variants.Understanding the differences is critical for specifying the correct grade for your application.
| Grade | Carbon Content | DIN Equivalent | JIS Equivalent | Max Hardness | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SS420 | ~0.20% C | 1.4021 / X20Cr13 | SUS420J1 | ~48–50 HRc | Cutlery, surgical tools, general engineering |
| SS420J2 | ~0.38–0.45% C | 1.4034 / X46Cr13 | SUS420J2 | ~52–55 HRc | Precision blades, moulds, highest hardness |
E Steel supplies SS420 & SS420J2 stainless steel round bars.

Chemical Composition of SS420 Stainless Steel
The chemical composition of SS420 stainless steel is shown below. The defining characteristics are a minimum 0.15% carbon (enabling hardening) and 12–14% chromium (providing corrosion resistance). Unlike SS304, Grade 420 contains no nickel, which is why it is magnetic.

Mechanical Properties of SS420 Stainless Steel
The mechanical properties of SS420 vary significantly depending on heat treatment condition.
The table below shows properties at different tempering temperatures.
Key points for engineers:
- Annealed condition: Soft, machinable — use for initial fabrication
- Tempered at 200–350°C: Maximum hardness zone — use for cutting tools and surgical instruments
- Tempered at 600–650°C: Optimum toughness — use for pump shafts, valve stems, and engineering components requiring impact resistance.

Corrosion Resistance of SS420 Stainless Steel
Best corrosion resistance of 420 stainless steel is achieved when SUS420 is hardened and surface ground or polished. In the hardened condition SUS420 has good corrosion resistance to atmosphere, foods, fresh water, mild alkalis and acids, steam, crude oil and other similar corrosive media.
Hardening of SS420 Stainless Steel
SS420 is suitable for heat treatment up to 52 HRc or higher depending on the carbon content and size of the component. European grade 1.2083 is a high carbon type 420 stainless steel and is ideally suited for application where highest achievable hardness is required.
Heat Treatment of SUS420
Heat treatment temperatures, including rate of heating, cooling and soaking times will vary due to factors such as the shape and size of each 420 stainless steel component. Other considerations during the heat treatment process include the type of furnace, quenching medium and work piece transfer facilities. Please consult your heat treatment provider for full guidance on heat treatment of stainless steel 420 grade.
Applications of SS420 / SUS420 Stainless Steel
SS420 / SUS420 round bars are used across industries in Malaysia and Singapore that require hardness, wear resistance, and polishability:
420 stainless steel is widely used in the medical and cutlery industries.
It is suitable for applications such as instruments, knives, hand tools, pump shafts and plastic moulds. SS420 is not recommended for use in temperatures above the relevant tempering temperature, because of the reduction in mechanical properties.

Q: What is the European DIN equivalent of SS420?
The European DIN/EN equivalent of SS420 depends on the carbon variant:Q : Can SS420 stainless steel be welded?
SS420 can be welded but requires care.Preheating to 200–300°C is recommended to prevent cold cracking, and post-weld annealing at 750–800°C is required to restore ductility and corrosion resistance in the weld zone.
Due to these requirements, SS420 is generally considered a low-weldability grade.
For welded assemblies requiring stainless steel, SS304L or SS316L are more appropriate choices.
Q : What hardness can SS420 achieve after heat treatment?
In its annealed condition, SS420 has a maximum hardness of 241 HB (approximately 22 HRc).After hardening (austenitising at 980–1035°C and quenching) followed by low-temperature tempering at 200–300°C, SS420 achieves 48–52 HRc depending on carbon content and section size.
Higher carbon variants (SS420J2 / 1.4034) can reach up to 55 HRc.
Q : Is SS420 the same as 420 stainless steel?
Yes. SS420, AISI 420, Grade 420, SUS420, and 1.4021 all refer to the same family of martensitic chromium stainless steel with 12–14% chromium and minimum 0.15% carbon.
The designation varies by the standard used:
- SS420 and AISI 420 are ASTM-based;
- SUS420 is the JIS (Japanese) designation;
-
1.4021 / X20Cr13 is the European EN/DIN designation.
Q : Is SS420 magnetic?
Yes. SS420 is magnetic in both its annealed and hardened conditions. As a martensitic stainless steel, its crystal structure is body-centred tetragonal (BCT) after hardening — which is inherently magnetic.
This distinguishes it from austenitic grades SS304 and SS316, which are non-magnetic in their annealed state.
